INTRODUCTION:

The Department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology & Head Neck Surgery was started in the year 2006 in MIMS teaching hospital when the college was established. The department has successfully completed 15 years of its journey and aims to provide quality ENT care services. The faculty in the ENT department are continuously appraising their skills required to treat and manage the wide spectrum of diseases and conditions encountered in the specialty of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery. The department runs with outpatient services everyday with 40 in-patient bed services. Surgical procedures for required patients are being done twice a week on elective basis and emergency surgeries are done as and when the need arises.

The department is well equipped with the latest surgical instruments and machineries both in the operating theatre, out-patient department and in audiology unit, which is the first of its kind to be seen in a government teaching hospital in Karnataka. With the training of 4 new post graduate students every year starting from the year June 2015, the department library has been upgraded with more than 300 books exclusively for ENT under graduates and post graduates. The department also has an exclusive skills lab dedicated for temporal bone dissection. In these challenging covid times, the manpower in the department has been solely responsible for screening all patients coming to the hospital by swab testing for covid. The department aims to continue the good work in treating all patients requiring ENT care services.

OUT-PATIENT SERVICES:

The department of ENT runs regular OPD services on all working days from 09.00 am to 4:00 pm.  The department is proud to be equipped with four modern OPD units with LED head light, suction apparatus, computer system, video monitor, and endoscopes for diagnostic nasal endoscopy and video laryngoscopy which aid in the early diagnosis of head and neck malignancies. The department has seen a steep increase in the proportion of patients being diagnosed with head and neck malignancies owing to these equipments made available.

Besides the regular OPD, special clinics are also conducted where patients with certain complaints are exclusively addressed.

All major and emergency surgeries are done in the major operation theatre. Wide range of surgical procedures in otology, rhinology, laryngology; and head and neck are being done with the aid of advanced surgical equipments available in the OT.Two operating Leica microscopes, Medtronic micromotor for ear surgeries, Karl Storz video monitor system with HD camera and light source, Mivonix video monitor system with Stryker HD camera, Karl Storz bronchoscopes of various sizes, Medtronic microdebider system, Coblator machine, and Medtronic integrated nerve monitoring system are available in the major OT.

Minor OT is equipped for emergency procedures like tracheostomy, endotracheal intubation, and other minor surgical procedures including diagnostic nasal endoscopy, video laryngoscopy, and operating microscope for examination of ear.

AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH SECTION:

Investigations done in audiology include Pure Tone Audiometry, Impedance Audiometry, Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry, Oto Acoustic Emission, and Behavioural audiometry. Speech and voice therapy are also given to children with speech disorders; and to adults with unilateral vocal cord paralysis and after undergoing microlaryngeal surgery for benign vocal cord lesions. As part of NPPCD, the audiology unit is involved in universal newborn hearing screening. Infants and children who require hearing rehabilitation by cochlear implant undergo the full panel of work-up here. Patients with physical handicap undergo hearing evaluation with PTA and BERA here before being deemed to receive a handicap certificate.

SKILL LAB:

The department is equipped with a skill lab for doing temporal bone dissections. Optofine surgical microscope is available to practice the dissection. Endoscopic surgeries can also be practised here with the aid of endoscopes available in the department and cadaver specimens received from the anatomy department for FESS.
